Extension Activity on “Alcohol Abuse and Yoga for Mental Health” at Pragati M. E. School, Namchungi

Introduction:
An extension activity was conducted by the Department of Zoology and Zoological Society, Nanda Nath Saikia College, Titabar at Pragati M. E. School, Namchungi, wherein 5 students of the 6th Semester of the Department, along with Dr. Manashi Bortamuly and Dr. Jafrin Farha Hussain (President and Secretary, Zoological Society, respectively) joined.
About 70 students were present in the programme. At the beginning, President of the Zoological Society, Dr. Manashi Bortamuly welcomed all the students of the school to the programme. Then Miss Cinmoyee Saikia and Miss Puja Gogoi deliberated on the importance of Yoga and how yoga can be a means for relieving mental stress, to the students. After the powerpoint presentation, students were asked to gather in the ground, and both the 6th Semester students demonstrated certain postures and asanas of Yoga. The students of Pragati ME School followed all the steps sincerely. Some of the pranayam that were taught include: Surya Namaskar, Padmasan, warming up sessions, rotation of the neck, wrist, shoulder, hip joints, etc. Some yoga asanas were also demonstrated by Dr. Manashi Bortamuly, President of the Zoological Society.
After a small tea break, and after the students had their lunch, a presentation was given by Prasanna Chetry, Shan Buragohain and Miss Hemashree Gogoi on the alcohol abuse, and how alcohol abuse has a negative impact on the society. The vote of thanks was conveyed by the Secretary of Zoological Society, Dr. Jafrin Farha Hussain. Both presentations were highly informative and educative. The students of Pragati ME School were greatly benefitted from both the sessions.
The programme started at 11 am and ended at 1 pm. After a group photograph, the meeting was over.
Report:
A field trip to the Fishery Research Center, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat was conducted on 9th April, 2024 for the students of 6th Semester, as part of their Discipline Specific Elective (DSE) Paper named Fish and Fisheries. The total number of students participating in the field trip was 20 and the trip was guided and accompanied by Dr. Manashi Bortamuly and Dr. Jafrin Farha Hussain, Assistant Professors of the Department of Zoology, N. N. Saikia College, Titabar. The Journey started at around 9:30 am from Titabar.
Trip Objective:
The objective of the trip was to understand the different types of fishing technologies and methods of induced breeding, integrated fish farming, and composite fish culture, etc.
Field Observation:
At the foremost, a field-based knowledge was delivered to the students by Ms. Niva Dutta, Research Scholar of the Department of Fishery Research Center. Various types of fishing technologies like induced breeding, composite fish culture, integrated fish farming, breeding hapa, etc., were demonstrated. Students also witnessed several plantations of drumstick plants, mulberry plants, banana plantations which enhance the productivity of the fish farming. Fish culture of Anabas, Clarias, and various carps etc., were demonstrated.
After the field visit, a power point presentation was delivered at 11 a.m by Biswajit Bordoloi, Junior Scientist of Fishery Research Center. He explained in details the methods of fishing in aquaculture, and how induced breeding techniques are carried out in the Department. The talk was attended by the 6h Semester Students of DKD College Dergaon too.
Conclusion:
The trip ended at about 2 pm. Group photographs were captured and students left for their respective destinations.
