 Departmental Activities, 2022

Add-On Course:

              The Department of Political Science has newly started Add-On Course in the Department for all the interested students of the college since 2022. The first session of Add-On Course was completed on “Human Rights” in the year 2022 and a new session of the Add-On Course on “Digital Governance/e-Governance” is going on from 23rd March, 2023 and the resource person of the inauguration ceremony were Ms. Asima Ahmed Saikia, Assistant Prof., Department of Political Science, JB College (Autonomous) and Mr. Subhasish Sharma, Associate Prof, Dept of Political Science, JB College (Autonomous).

Extension Activities:

An extension activity has been conducted by the Department of Political Science, NN Saikia College at Mariani College, Mariani on 25th July, 2022. Mr. Joy Prakash Oza, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science of this college delivered a lecture on “Framing of Indian Constitution”. A total of 27 students attended the lecture program. The lecture program was conducted as an initiative of MoU among the two colleges.

Inter-District Students' Seminar:

        The Department of Political Science, NN Saikia College in collaboration with Jorhat District Political Science Asssociation organized a students' seminar on 3rd Nov, 2022 in the college auditorium. The program was started with the introduction and felicitation of all distinguished invitees. It was followed by the wlcome address delivered by  Dr. Litool Baruah, the Principal of NN Saikia College. After that, Dr. Gunaram Nath, retired Head of the Department of Political Science Department, NN Saikia College delivered inaugural speech. The whole program was presided over by Subhasish Sharma, Head of the Dept, Political Science Dept, Jagannath Barooah College, Jorhat. Few words had been delivered by the Secretary of Jorhat District Political Science Association, Jorhat and Joy Prakash Oza, Head of the Dept, Department of Political Science, NN Saikia College. After that the seminar competition was started with key-note address delivered by Monalisha Gogoi, student, 5th semester, Dept of Political Science, NN Saikia College. Total 11 groups from 8 different colleges of Jorhat district with total number of 11 papers participated in the seminar competition. 

At the end of the competition, the observer of the competition Bolin Hazarika, Retired Associate Professor of Dept. of Political Science, Jagannath Borooah College reflected certain important key points related to preparing research paper. He provided an enlightened speech on how to write a research paper. He basically focused on research methodology, which will be beneficial not only for the students but also for the teachers. He then focused on the key points not covered in the papers presented by the students so that the students could rectify their mistakes in their further steps. Then it was followed by jury’s speech, Dr. Kumud Ghosh, Head of the Dept, Department of Education, Na-Kachari College and Dr. Afruja Islam, Assistant Professor, Jorhat Law College respectively.

              They evaluated the whole seminar competition; papers presented by the participants and provided speech on writing research papers, journal formats and so on. They also announced the results of the competition where 1st prize was won by “Gramya Anchalar Unnayan aru Panchayatirajor Gurutta: Ek Khetrovittik Adhyayan” presented by Nabajyoti Neog, Borholla College followed by “Gramya Sabhat Jonoxadharonor Angxogrohon: Ek Khetrovittik Adhyayan, Meleng Purani Goan” presented by Ankit Sarma, Priyakhi Das, Sudeshna Suman Borthakur of Kakojan College and “Globalization and its Influence upon Governance” presented by Abhilekh Baruah of Jagannath Baruah College won 2nd and 3rd prize respectively.

              Then, Subhasish Sharma, the HOD, Department of Political Science, Jagannath Borooah College provided the presidential speech and the program was concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Priti Bora, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Political Science, Nanda Nath Saikia College followed by singing of Jatiyo Sangeet. After all, the program was very nice, enlightened, learned that is supposed to help the students and teachers for future endeavors especially in the domain of research.

Children’s Day Celebration at Mejenga Village :

The program was started on 14th November on the occasion of Children’s Day at Mejenga Govt. School which was located at Mejenga village, adopted village of NN Saikia College from 10am onwards by the Political Science Forum, Department of Political Science, Nanda Nath Saikia College in the school premises. The meeting was presided over by the SMDC President Kailash Rajput. It was followed by introduction and felicitation of all the guests present in the meeting. The objective of the meeting was explained by the Headmaster of the school Mr. Abhijeet Hazarika. After that Mr. Hemendra Thengal and Ms. Priti Bora, Assistant Professors, Dept of Political Science, NN Saikia College delivered their speech on organizing the meeting and on the significance of the Children’s Day. Mr. Hemendra Thengal highlighted on the ongoing proposal of adopting Mejenga Village by NN Saikia College and the social activities which are going to be held in the village on mutual collaboration. The students present in the meeting delivered speeches on Children’s Day. Some students of the school performed impressively Dance, Dramas, One Act Play, and Poem Recitation etc. After that some of the villagers present in the meeting also delivered their enlightened speech on how to motivate the students to participate in various competitions, how to maintain discipline in the school and so on. Then it was followed by Prize Distribution of various competitions held from 10th to 13th of November in the school such as Drawing, Quiz, Extemporary Speech, Essay Writing Competition etc. After that the program was concluded with the presidential speech and singing of our Jatiyo Sangeet.

Glimpses of some events organized by the Department :

The Department has organized a seminar on “Coalition Politics in India on 26th June,1999 at the college. Dr. Arupjyoti Choudhury, Senior Lecturer, Department of Political Science, Cotton College has delivered a very informative lecture as Resource Person.

A Seminar on “Self Employment and Self-Help Group” was organized for the members of different local self-help groups by the department at the college auditorium on 22nd September,2003. The B.D.O. of Titabar Development Block, Mr. J.K.Goswami was the resource person.

The Department has organized a seminar on “Role of NGO’s in Socio-Economic Development” on !st November, 2003. A prominent NGO, NEADS joins hand with the department and Chairperson of the NGO, Mr. Suresh Gogoi as the resource person. More than hundred students of different department has participated in the seminar.

The Department has organized a one day workshop on ‘Journalism’ on 11th December, 2010 Senior journalist of Golaghat Mr. Dwipen Dutta was the resource person. Degree third year students of the college were the participants.

The Department was pleased to organize a UGC sponsored Regional Workshop on “Protection of Child Rights and Its Violation under Human Rights Education Programme on22nd October, 2011. Dr. Jogneswar Bora, Principal, C.K.B. College, Teok, Jorhat and Mr. Deep Ranjan Chetia, Senior advocate, DC’s court, Jorhat has delivered fruitful lectures as resource persons.

The Department has organized second UGC Sponsored Regional Workshopon Human Rights Education on 26th November, 2011 at Madhopur Gaon Panchayat Office premise. Resource persons for the workshop were Dr. Swarnalata Hazarika, HoD, Department of Political Science, H.B.P.Girls’ College, Golaghat and Mrs. Bonti Gogoi, Advocate of DC’s Court Golaghat.

An extensive survey of the Voting Behaviour of the Electors of Titabar was conducted by the students of the department covering 5 villages in 2012. Total 90 respondents randomly selected for the survey. Mr. Gunaram Nath has supervised the survey.

On the occasion of the Second 6th monthly conference of the Jorhat District Political Science Association held in our college on 18th February, 2012, the Department has organized a seminar on “Right to Life and Personal Freedom”. Dr. Jogneswar Bora, Principal of C.K.B. College, Teok was the resource person. The department has felicitated one of the senior most faculties of Political Science of the district, Dr. Satish Chandra Rajkhowaa, retired Principal of D.C.B. Girls’ College for his outstanding  contribution in the field of political science education.

A two days workshop on “Human Rights Education” was organized by the department on 6th & 7th September, 2012. The workshop was inaugurated by H’nble Chairma, State Human Rights Commission, Assam Justice Dr. Altab H. Saikia.Prof. B.N. Pandey,Dean, Feculty of Law, Banaras Hindu University; Dr. Adil-Ul-Yasin, Professor, Dibrugarh University, Dr. Nonigopal Mahanta Associate Porfessor, Gauhati University and Dr. Bolin Hazarika, Associate Professor, J.B. College were the resource persons. A research based book “Prospect of Politics and Society”, edited by Mr. Joy Prakash Oza was inaugurated in the workshop.

The Department has organized a seminar on “Feminism: Issues and Concerns” on November 2013 and the resource person of the seminar was Dr. Alpana Borgohain, Associate Professor, HoD, Department of Political Science, Dibrugarh University.

The Department has organized an UGC funded Regional Workshop on Human Rights on 25th February, 2015. The workshop was consisting of three dimensions relating to the concept of Human Rights. Dr. Adil-ul-Yasin, retired Professor of Dibrugarh University has delivered speech on “Theoretical Aspect of Human Rights, Dr. Bolin Hazarika, Associate Professor, J. B. College delivered speech on “Violation of Human Rights with special reference to Erom Sharmila, the social activist of Manipur, and Dr. Sabyasashi Mahanta, Associate Professor Sivasagar College delivered speech on “Protection of Human Rights and the Role of State.”

The 17th Annual Conference, NEISPA :

The department has organized the “17th Annual Conference of the North-East India Political Science Associaion” (NEISPA) on 8th and 9th February, 2008. The conference was inaugurated by Prof. M. N. Das, Dibrugarh University and Dr. Abu Nasser S. Ahmed, Professor of OKD Institute of Social Change and Development, Guwahati has delivered the V.V. Rao memorial talk on “Mahatma and Non-violence” in the session, Dr. Priyanka Upadhya, Professor and Director, Malviya Centre for Peace Research, Banaras Hindu University has delivered keynote address and Dr. B.G. Vergese, advisor to the former Prime Minister Late Rajiv Gandhi, the recipient of Sankardeva Award 2008, noted writer on security aspect has delivered invited Lecture on “Peace and Conflict Resolution in the North-eastern Region. Dr. Vergese was felicitated in the occasion by the department on this achievement.

Moreover, with the auspices of NEISPA a national seminar on “Peace and Conflict Resolution” was also conducted by the department and the resource person of the seminar was Dr. Priyanka Upadhya. More than hundred participants were attended the conference who were come from entire North-East region and few from Kolkata. A souvenir called ‘Glimpse’ was published by the department on the occasion of the conference.

Students’ activities outside the Department :

The students of Department of Political Science participated a seminar on “Mid-day Meal” on 2014, conducted by the Jorhat District Political Science Association in Central College, Jorhat which has won the first position.

Rohit Saikia, student of Political Science has won Bronze Medal and Silver Medal in Rongoli making competition in the Youth Festival of Dibrugarh University held on 2013-14 and 2014-15 respectively, and for the same he again won a Bronze Medal on 2015 which was held at North Lakhimpur College.

Department Activities :

Every year the Department has been awarding  the students who got first class in major in Political Science to encourage them.

Celebration of Teachers’ Day :

Every year on 5th September the students of the department celebrate “The National Teachers’ Day”. In that occasion, department felicitates and paid tribute to Late Dr. Sarvapalli Radha Krishnan on his birth anniversary.

Departmental Wall-Magazine :

The department has been publishing a yearly magazine “Sristi” from the year 2013 onwards on 5th September on the the auspices occasion of Teachers’ Day.

 

Celebration of Freshers and Farewell :

The Department organizes farewell to the outgoing students and celebrates the fresher’s of new comers in the beginning of every academic session.

Teachers-Guardian Meet:

The Department of Political Science organizes teachers-guardian meet twice in a year under the Chairmanship of HOD, Political Science, where other faculties, major students of the department along with guardias  attend the meet. In that meeting the guardians are informed about the progress of their wards and also they discuss about the different aspects of academic matters under semester system.

Educational Tour:

Every year major students of the Department under the guidance of HoD and other faculties of the Department visit different places as part of their educational tour, prepare report on the field survey and submit to the Department. Last Educational Tour/Field Study of 6th Semester Students was organized to Kumalia Chapori Mising Village, Hatihal of Jorhat District on 28th February, 2023 to explore the socio-economic condition and political awareness of the villagers.

 Celebration of National Voters Day:

 Every year the Department celebrates National Voters Day on 25th January to create awareness among the students of the college.

Career Counseling:

Hemendra Thengal, senior faculty of the department has delivered lectures as Resource Person on “Prospects of Future Employability: Goals And Means” at Rangajan High School on 16th November,2022, Srimanta Shankar Vidyapith, Titabar on 11th January, 2023 and Simantabati Janajatiya High School, Medeluajan on 21st February, 2023 respectively.

Inter Battalion Debate Competition: 

on invitation by the Commandant, 3rd Assam Police Battalion, Mr. Hemendra Thengal and Ms. Priti Bora has performed the duty of Speaker cum Judge and Jurry at the “Inter Battalion Debate Competition on Human Rights are Obstacles to Police Forces to Perform the Duties” on 28/11/2022.

Inter-Departmental Teacher Exchange Programme:

Hemendra Thengal under Teacher Exchange Program has delivered a lecture on “The Notion of Nation-State: Past and Present” in the Department of Geography, NN Saikia College on 23/02/2023.
